Software / Firmware Engineer — Drone Collision Avoidance

LEARN MORE

Overview

Airspace Experience Technologies (ASX: iflyasx.com) is a startup founded in 2017 with a mission to advance mobility for the mass traveling public by repurposing automotive electric vehicle technologies, safety systems, and mass production techniques. ASX has been awarded multiple patents and DoD/State contracts for our heavy lift electric VTOL platform and AeroNet UTM product.

Our goal in developing our AeroNet advanced mobility devices and AeroNet UTM back office is to create an international practice for enhanced mobility management with a web-based Common Operation Picture (COP). This platform gives municipalities and infrastructure operators the tools to license, authenticate, monitor, and facilitate collision avoidance for connected vehicles on the ground and in the air. Our ultimate objective is to integrate automated systems at scale using international standards while improving safety, security, and efficiency of automated robotic systems within the “public square.”

We're seeking talented individuals with a passion for connected intelligent mobility to join our limited number of technical positions.

Job Description

Location: Detroit, MI (Hangar 7, Coleman A. Young International Airport)

Type: Full-time,on-site

Reports to: CEO

Salary: $60K–$120K

You will own the behavior of the EdgeNode collision avoidance system: the flight-stack logic that decides how a vehicle detects, predicts, and avoids conflict. You define and build the features; a partner engineer owns getting them onto target hardware.

This role is paired with our Embedded Integration Engineer — EdgeNode, who owns the hardware interfaces, HIL rig, and release testing. You hand off validated features; they make them run on real vehicles.

‍

What you will do

•  Build new collision avoidance and flight-stack features in the EdgeNode codebase, and keep existing ones working.

•  Diagnose and fix bugs; harden the code against failure modes before they reach thefield.

•  Maintain the GPU, CPU, and SITL simulators and extend them as new featuresdemand.

•  Keep the core collision avoidance codebase clean and shared: common componentsacross devices, clear feature boundaries, disciplined versioning.

•  Run SITL campaigns to validate every new feature before it goes to hardware.

•  Expose new features through web APIs and interfaces so the rest of the team cantest them.

‍

What you bring

•  Strong C/C++ and a track record of shipping drone or robotics software.

•  Hands-on experience with PX4 and MAVLink.

•  Experience building or maintaining flight simulators (SITL at minimum; GPU/CPUphysics simulation a plus).

•  Comfort owning a codebase end to end: architecture, tests, releases.

‍

Nice to have

•  Motion planning, sense-and-avoid, or detect-and-avoid (DAA) algorithms.

•  ROS 2, Gazebo, or similar simulation stacks.

•  Experience on UTM, remote ID, or V2X-connected vehicle systems.

About ASX and this role

Airspace Experience Technologies (ASX) builds AeroNet, a Universal Traffic Management platform for crewed aircraft, uncrewed aircraft, and ground vehicles, and the EdgeNode C-V2X onboard unit that connects them. We are based at Hangar 7 at Coleman A. Young International Airport in Detroit, working with defense, airport, and automotive partners. The collision avoidance logic you build is what lets EdgeNode-equipped vehicles share airspace and roads safely, and it is the core of what AeroNet delivers to partners.
